Fundación Visión is the only institution that drives into the very inland section of Paraguay with the purpose of searching for blind and visually impaired and offering free eye examinations on people’s doorsteps.
In 1992, Dr. Duerksen started Programa Visión with a regular outreach activity in a leprosy hospital 81 kilometers from the capital. Patients were brought to and operated at “Hospital Centro Medico Bautista” at a low cost or for free.
Since its beginnings, the organization has grown substantially. In 1992, 80 consultations and 5 cataract surgeries were performed. Twenty years later, Fundación Visión completed more than 90,000 consultations and 5,000 surgeries. Fundación Visión does about 45% of all the cataract surgeries that are done in the country and has helped reduced the prevalence of blindness to 1.0%
Through the TOMS partnership with Seva, Fundación Visión helps support cataract surgeries to people who cannot otherwise afford the cost of surgery.
