Lions Aravind Institute of Community Ophthalmology (Madurai, India)
LAICO is the first institution of its kind in a developing country. Prior to the establishment of LAICO in the early 1990's, the only sources of training in community ophthalmology was the International Centre for Eye Health in London and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. LAICO is adept at identifying gaps in service, trends in needs for eye care, new professional groups required to provide efficient eye care, and methods needed to train more people. In addition to world class degree and certificate programs in a wide range of management topics, LAICO also coordinates Aravind's extensive clinical training programs in ophthalmology and related professions. LAICO is a key advisor to this project for developing CCOs and increasing their impact and is developing the tool which will be used for CCO network and global service delivery benchmarking.
