Lumbini Eye Institute and Center for Community Ophthalmology and Research (Bhairahawa, Nepal)
The Lumbini Eye Institute and Center for Community Ophthalmology and Research is the clinical, management, and community service training arm of the Lumbini Eye Care Programme. Its companion eye hospital, the Shree Rana Ambika Eye Hospital is the highest volume cataract surgery facility in Western Nepal and performs nearly 40% of all cataract surgeries in Nepal. The hospital has been sustainable for its running costs since 1994. The Lumbini hospital also has a wide range of specialty services and has been a rotation site for ophthalmology residents from the national Institute of Medicine for years. Lumbini has its own ophthalmology residency program, as well as ongoing training programs for paramedicals, managers, and community workers. Expanded training programs and mentoring are receiving strategic emphasis so as to assist eye hospitals and primary eye centers seeking sustainability.
