Vivekananda Mission Ashram Netra Niramay Niketan — VMANNN
(Chaitanyapur, Bengal, India)

Since the early 1990s, Vivekananda Mission Ashram Netra Niramay Niketan has offered community-oriented eye hospital services to an underserved region of rural India. The eye hospital is based on a “service and education campus” which includes pre-school to advanced education for more than 6,000 students; some of them are sighted and some are blind. The eye hospital provides approximately 14,000 surgeries annually and offers the only specialty services available in the area for pediatric ophthalmology, cornea, and glaucoma.  In more recent years the program has added eye care training and community research. VMANNN has initiated a mentoring and training process with six surrounding eye hospitals which are severely underperforming. The aim is to at least double surgical productivity within three years. VMANNN also is involved with several INGOs, each of which provide some specific input into the growth of the service program. Many of VMANNN’s staff have been trained at Aravind or at LVPEI and numerous projects and interests continue to be shared. By developing more formally into a Center for Community Ophthalmology, VMANNN will have a major impact on service delivery and sustainability throughout this part of India and neighboring Bangladesh.
