Training Ophthalmic Nurses

Seva's Global Sight Initiative began in 2006 as a group of eye hospitals committed to changing the way eye care is done. The objective is to provide high quality, high volume eye care services in an economically robust and sustainable way.

The Global Sight Initiative goal is to engage 100 eye hospitals to perform one million additional cataract surgeries annually by 2020.

Training ophthalmic nurses to work in these hospitals is a key piece of the puzzle.

After intensive training, ophthalmic nurses perform 80% of patient care in eye hospitals. From examining patients to assisting in surgery, these nurses are working hard each day to prevent blindness and to restore the sight of people needlessly living in darkness.

Through your generous support, Seva has helped train hundreds of people to be ophthalmic nurses around the globe, mostly young women who previously had few options for meaningful employment.

In countries like Bangladesh, where the average girl is married by the age of 16, few career options exist for these young women. When provided with training, they are able to achieve financial independence and have a direct positive impact on their community.
