Women's Equality Day is August 26th, and here at Seva that's a day worth celebrating. Although we are first and foremost an eye care organization, promoting gender equity is also one of our top priorities. And for good reason. Women and girls in developing countries face even higher barriers to eye care than do their male counterparts.

Seva's 40th Anniversary Celebrations: Music to Our Ears

Seva kicked off its 40th anniversary year celebration with a hometown concert at the UC Theatre in Berkeley, California in early June.

An amazing lineup of talented musicians played to a packed house, with beloved founding Seva board member Wavy Gravy serving as emcee.

Magnifying Seva's Reach and Expanding Opportunity for Women

Seva supports training programs for local eye care professionals with various levels of expertise in over 20 countries. Ophthalmic assistants, counselors, and other trained eye care staff can multiply each ophthalmologist's efficiency ten-fold, greatly increasing the number of patients an eye clinic or hospital can help every year.

Patient Story: Life is Looking Up for Nine-Year-Old Salma

Nine-year-old Salma, who lives in Alharam, Egypt, was constantly forced to tuck her head on her shoulder in order to see clearly due to persistent double vision. It was the only thing that brought her relief in an increasingly blurry world. And between the severity of her physical symptoms and nonstop teasing from her peers at school, Salma found she was no longer able to attend school full time.
