Seva supports projects to strengthen eye care service delivery in the Debre Berhan and Nekemte areas of Ethiopia. These are both remote areas with limited access to any health care, including eye care. Seva has worked with our partners to provide quality eye care and prevent blindness from trachoma, a debilitating eye disease that can lead to scarring of the cornea and eventually blindness. The national prevalence of active trachoma for children in the age group 1-9 years is 40%, and active trachoma is found in regions with high population density and poor sanitation and hygiene.
Currently, Seva supports surgeries for trachoma trichiasis, eyeglasses, and medical treatments through partners Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology and Light for the World. By providing support for direct service delivery to these partners, Seva is helping reduce the burden of the high cost of eye care found in the Africa region.
