Fatuma is a small-business owner and entrepreneur in Tanzania keeping up with the pace of her dreams. Like many of the women we've met, she's resilient, capable, and through her eyes – sees the world as one big opportunity.

Even when she can't actually see.

Fatuma knew she needed treatment but couldn't cover the costs of care, transportation, and accommodation. Then, she heard an ad in her village about an eye screening camp nearby. She visited and was diagnosed with cataract. The very next day, her sight was restored through a 15-minute cataract surgery.

She was ecstatic and thanked the hospital, our partners, and you – today she continues supporting her family through her small business.

Nelly is a bubbly 5-year-old girl who loves to play soccer. She has dealt with visual problems since birth.

When she was 11 months old, her mother took her to Esquintla Vision Center in Guatemala, where she received her first pair of glasses to get her through until she was old enough to undergo an operation.

At age five, Nelly received surgery to correct strabismus, improving her eyesight by 80%. When she is old enough to have the second surgery, her vision will be fully corrected.

Today, Nelly can play ball with confidence (And without tripping) and has better focus in her everyday life. With the strides she’s made, Nelly’s mom is hopeful she can start studying next year.

Seva is a global nonprofit eye care organization that transforms lives by restoring sight and preventing blindness.

Our programs build self-sustaining eye clinics that provide critical eye care to underserved communities, especially women, children, and indigenous communities.

Over a billion people live with unaddressed vision impairments and hundreds of millions more need ongoing eye care. Thankfully, 90% of all vision impairment can be prevented or cured with your help. Seva’s programs have reduced the cost of cataract surgery to just $50 and have been instrumental in making eye care available to the global poor.
