The Grateful Dead Hit Another Home Run for Seva

On August 3rd, four Bay Area institutions came together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love. The San Francisco Giants and Oakland A’s honored hometown favorites the Grateful Dead, and in turn the iconic band used the event to raise funds and awareness for the Seva Foundation. The Grateful Dead and Seva have a deep connection that goes back to the organization’s early years, when they played Seva’s first-ever benefit concert and raised seed money to help get the organization off the ground.

The baseball game earlier this month proved to be another big win for Seva, thanks to the thousands of fans who attended the game and helped to raise money for the organization. Funds raised will go directly to supporting essential services that will restore and protect the sight of men, women and children in economically marginalized communities around the world.

“We are truly humbled by the many ways that the Grateful Dead continue to support Seva’s vision of a world that is free of preventable blindness,” said Executive Director Kate Moynihan. “The baseball game was not only a lot of fun it was testament to the long and deep connection between our two groups. Our gratitude for their ongoing support can’t be overstated.”

The Grateful Dead played a benefit concert on behalf of the fledgling Seva Foundation in 1980, which helped the organization to find its footing and begin its work toward providing nearly 4 million sight-saving surgeries for patients around world. And the connection goes beyond just the music. Bob Weir serves as an honorary lifetime Seva board member, and his support for the organization has raised its visibility among musicians and Deadheads alike.

Thanks to all of you who came out for the ballgame on August 3rd. It was a huge hit for Seva, and a great way to celebrate one of our longest and most meaningful partnerships.
