Sight in Cambodia
Many Cambodia children do not have access to eye care services. Seva trains Cambodian doctors and provides infrastructure so that Cambodia can provide care to it's own citizens. Last year, over 70,000 children in Cambodia received eye examinations as a result of Seva's work. 1/2 of children who go blind in developing countries will die within the first year. By preventing and treating blindness, Seva provides opportunities for life to children around the world.

Dhana Kadka is blind due to cataracts. Despite this, he walked 10km through the rocky terrain of far west Nepal by feel and memory. Kadka learned that a group of Seva-supported eye doctors were coming for a special visit. So he made the perilous journey on foot for the chance to see.

Brilliant Wins a TED Prize!

Seva founder Dr. Larry Brilliant, was named as one of three recipients of the 2006 TED Prize at a private event in New York City. The prize honors people with "ideas and passions big enough to change the world" — such as the 2005 winner, rock star and international activist Bono.

The TED prize is a project of the innovative TED Community (Technology, Entertainment, Design) — a multidisciplinary group of influential thought leaders. TED's diverse membership includes Fortune 500 CEOs, environmentalists and scientists, architects, artists. musicians and more. The group is united by a desire to make the world a better place, and they approach their mission with curiosity, open-mindedness, and a tendency to think outside the box.

This year's other TED Prize winners are Arab-American documentary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim, and humanitarian design pioneer Cameron Sinclair. The TED Prize Honorary Advisory Committee consists of founder, Jeff Bezos; author, Eve Ensler; jazz legend, Herbie Hancock; actress, Goldie Hawn; and UN Under-Secretary-General for Communication, Shashi Tharoor.

His Brilliant Career
"I'm the luckiest guy in the world!" Larry says with amazement. "I got to see the last case of smallpox. I've lived to see Seva's projects give sight to two million blind people and grow with other projects. I've been working in India on the campaign to eradicate polio, and I think we've just about done it. And now — they give me a prize!”

Larry is being recognized for lifetime of making a difference, as a medical doctor, epidemiologist, technologist, activist and author who is healing the world. TED Prize press briefings cover highlights of Larry's career, including:

  • The successful smallpox eradication program with the World Health Organization.
  • Co-founding the pioneering online community The Well, with Stewart Brand — noting that TIME and Wired magazines call Larry a "technology visionary."
  • Serving as a CEO for two technology start-up ventures.
  • And of course, his work as a founder of Seva.

Larry appreciates the honor, yet what the TED Prize really represents for him is an opportunity to improve the health of some of the world's neediest people — thanks to the TED Prize wish!

A Truly Grand Prize
Each TED Prize recipient is granted one "world-changing" wish, to be revealed at the 2006 TED Conference in Monterey, California, on February 23. Members of the TED Community and a group of world-class companies have pledged support to help fulfill these wishes. The granted wish is intended to aid efforts to develop sustainable and widespread benefit for the global community.

"We want them to think big," explains the TED Prize website, "and we want them to fully understand the range of resources the TED Community can offer them. We are willing to spend, in hard cash, $100,000 on each winner. And our goal is to convert this into received value that is an order of magnitude greater. How? By connecting our winners into the heart of the TED community; by tapping into the enthusiastic support of our team of sponsors and partners; and by working with our winners to deliver something creative and big and bold and wonderful."

"It's almost like a dream," Larry said. "All these companies and foundations and organizations are pledged to fulfill my wish! I even have a Wish Coordinator. When I met her, I couldn't stop looking at her — and she said, 'Why are you staring at me?' I said, "Because you look much smaller than I expected.' She asked, 'What did you expect?' I said, 'I expected seven foot three and green! The only Wish Coordinator I've ever heard of is a genie!'"

An Inspired Nudge
"We're proud to be honoring three such remarkable individuals," says Chris Anderson, Curator of the TED Conference. "We believe they will inspire the TED Community and perhaps many others to play a role in nudging our world toward a better future."

Congratulations, Larry!
