Celebrating Ram Dass

"When I got involved with Seva, it was like putting on an outfit that multiplied my capacity to be involved with the relief of suffering a thousand-fold. Because this group had such extraordinary diversity of skills and talents and preoccupations, if you will. And we were able at the same moment to do something that was sophisticated scientifically, and that was financially large-scale and responsible and at the same moment be involved with the individual human heart."
– Ram Dass

In 1978, along with Larry Brilliant, Girija Brilliant, Wavy Gravy, Jahanara Romney and Suzanne Gilbert, Ram Dass co-founded Seva.

Ram Dass was the thread that love so many disparate gems together in a necklace that was Seva.

He was the frequent partner-in-crime to counter-culture clown Wavy Gravy and a spiritual traveler to Dr. V.

He was the combatant-in-chief and mutual foil to Seva co-founder Nicole Grasset.

He was a friend to Larry and Girija Brilliant, Jahanara Romney and Suzanne Gilbert.

With his help and spiritual guidance, Seva has helped over 40 million people in over 20 countries receive sight-saving vision care.

"To Seva, he was co-founder, architect, spiritual Northstar – and servant, teacher, friend, and it may seem strange, super fundraiser."
– Drs. Girija and Larry Brilliant, Seva co-founders

"Ram Dass's journey has been a search for love and for finding a way to stay in the space of love once he experienced it. Ram Dass was always loving, but now he is love."
– Mirabai Bush

"Ram Dass's lasting legacy is his commitment to a life of compassionate service and to a higher consciousness centered around love.
…It is interesting that Ram Dass died not long after the sun began to return with more light for the world."

– Steve Rhodes

"This servant of God
Whose light burned bright on Maui
Now illuminates eternity"

– Wavy Gravy

Ram Dass lived his life with generosity, beauty, and love, setting a high standard for Seva as we strive to end avoidable blindness through partnerships worldwide.

Ram Dass's legacy lives on in the millions of people who have had their sight restored, and the millions more who will.

We celebrate his life today and every day.

"The ego, this incarnation, is life and dying.
The soul is infinite."

– Ram Dass

In loving memory, Ram Dass.
