Regaining Independence

Ganesh Prasad and his wife Tikka Maya are farmers in Nepal. But when Ganesh lost his vision, he also lost his ability to run their farm. He couldn’t visit neighbors or family members. Tikka had to stay by his side constantly, helping him to eat, walk, and even use the bathroom. No longer able to run the farm herself due to Ganesh’s dependence on her, Tikka had to sell all their cattle. Their remote village lacked access to eye care and, even if they had been able to travel to receive care, they could not afford surgery to help Ganesh regain his sight.

After Ganesh lived for more than seven years in near-blindness, a free eye screening camp offered by Seva partner Bharatpur Eye Hospital came to his area. After an exam, Ganesh and Tikka were transported to the hospital and Ganesh received free cataract surgery. With his sight restored, Ganesh and Tikka have regained their independence and feel confident about the future.
