Vishnu Maya: Carried Into a Himalayan Eye Camp!

Her name is Vishnu Maya. She lost her vision since the last one-and-a-half years.

Because she cannot see, she cannot walk. It is better to die rather than to be alive, blind.

In places like the Himalayas of Nepal, more than half of blind people are women and girls without access to eye care services. When Vishnu Maya lost her sight due to cataract, she was no longer able to work or even to walk on her own. Her son carried her on his back for two days to reach our surgical camp.

She can see only white, like a fog.

Tomorrow, I hope, she can see the world once more.

Cataract surgery is a straightforward procedure, but one that is not available in places like rural Nepal. Seva brings these services to the places they are needed the most, serving hundreds of thousands of women and girls every year. Vishnu Maya's operation was completed in less than 15 minutes. And the next morning her bandages were removed.

Now she can count.

She was bilaterally blind, now she can see.

Walking home beside her son, Vishnu Maya was finally able to see the mountains she had been carried over, blind, just the day before.
