2020 Annual Report

Seva began our work more than 40 years ago with a commitment to change the world by eliminating preventable blindness. Our goal is to create a world where no person will lose their vision because they are unable to afford access to eye care. By cultivating strategic partnerships and using a systems-building approach, Seva has helped programs in more than 20 countries develop high quality eye care infrastructure.

By supporting Seva, you create a ripple effect, helping thousands of people to regain their sight, and transforming the lives of millions. Together, we built sustainable eye care systems throughout the world that will continue to provide free or affordable quality eye care to under-served communities for years to come.

Seva Impact Report JULY 1, 2020 – JUNE 30, 2021

During 2020-2021, you helped Seva develop and publish the first national COVID-19 SOP (standard operating procedures) for eye hospitals in Nepal; and also successfully implement Seva's technology call for ideas, providing community-based teams the opportunity to imagine and design solutions for better eye care. With schools shut down across the globe, Seva needed to find effective and safe ways to provide outreach for children. Especially so, because with kids – treating eye care conditions is one of the most cost-effective poverty alleviating interventions. Thankfully, our partners found new ways to reach families.

You've helped Seva advance our work with Native communities in the USA through Seva's American Indian Sight Initiative. Native Nations disproportionately suffer from vision impairment due to poverty, geographic isolation, and cultural differences. This past year we worked with indigenous partners to expand access to health and wellness services while also laying the groundwork for future technology solutions to expand eye health equity.

With leading experts, Seva will launch a groundbreaking retinal camera that will revolutionize how eye care clinics diagnose diseases. In a paradigm-shifting year, Seva partners and teams provided life-changing eye care services to 2.8 million men, women, and children. Read more about the innovation and bravery our Seva team demonstrated to make this possible.

The Economic and Social Cost of Visual Impairment and Blindness in India

If you ever wondered about the cost of not addressing avoidable blindness, this paper will map out the implications in one of the world’s largest economies – India.

A country that aspires to be a $5 trillion Rupee economy cannot afford constraints to economic growth like poor eye health. Over the past 42 years, Seva Foundation has worked tirelessly to support our partners across India as they pioneered inexpensive and effective procedures. Today, in a majority of cases, vision losses can be mitigated – cheaply – with glasses or cataract surgery.

The intent of this document is to provide a current snapshot of the eye care context in Cox's Bazar District of Bangladesh.

The driving factor of this assessment was the influx of Rohingya refugees, which caught international attention. Seva Foundation, as an organization working to develop eye care services within Myanmar and Bangladesh, was concerned about the plight of the Rohingya refugees. Several of the agencies and organizations working in the eye sector in Bangladesh were interested to respond to this refugee crisis and have started to engage in the process of responding.
