In 1978, after working with the World Health Organization (WHO) to end smallpox in India, Doctors Larry Brilliant and Girija Brilliant published Death of a Killer Disease. It asked readers to find the compassion and understanding to support international health programs benefiting the poor.
$20,000 in donations arrived in Larry and Girija's mailbox, with the first $5,000 coming from the not-yet-famous computer inventor Steve Jobs.
An eclectic group that included the WHO’s Dr. Nicole Grasset, spiritual teacher Ram Dass, activist/clown Wavy Gravy, and founder of the Aravind Eye Hospital Dr. Venkataswamy gathered in snowy Michigan to consider this question: How could they be of service?
The answer was Seva Foundation. Seva (pronounced Say-Va) is a Sanskrit word meaning "selfless service to others" and came to represent for us the dream of relieving suffering and reducing poverty in the most effective ways possible.
Seva has become a global nonprofit eye care organization that works with local communities around the world to develop self-sustaining programs that preserve and restore sight. Since 1978, Seva programs have helped 57 million people see clearly again, and Seva has grown to be one of the top nonprofits in the country. Two years ago, Seva Foundation topped Nicholas Kristof's list of organizations to support!

Friends, you would not expect anything less from an epidemiologist than to insist that everybody attending the birthday party perform a COVID test before arrival OR wear a KN95 mask.
We ask this because we are currently experiencing a COVID surge here in the Bay Area. To help make this safe, easy, and maybe even fun, Seva is providing colorful KN95 masks for everyone unable to test before they come.
We would like to see your lovely, happy, smiling faces, so please test before you come.
Please bring a printed or digital version of your ticket and your ID.
We recommend taking an Uber or Lyft to the event. It’s in downtown SF, which means parking can be challenging. If you do drive, parking is available at the Mason/O’Farrell Garage, located at the corner of Mason and O’Farrell streets.
The show will begin promptly at 7:30. Please allow enough time to find your seat.
