Our Work: Why Sight?

Sight = Freedom

Over a billion people live with a vision impairment that is preventable or treatable.

Almost 90% of people affected with vision impairment live in developing countries, where not being able to see often means a life of poverty. It's nearly impossible to work, feed yourself, or meet your basic needs.

Together, we can change that...

A Solution in Sight

90% of vision impairment can be prevented or cured.

In fact, more than half of the world's blindness is caused by cataracts, a condition that can be reversed with a 15-minute surgery costing only $50.

Restoring Sight and Preventing Blindness...

Breaks the Cycle of Poverty

Blindness and poor vision can keep people trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty. Edina and her husband owned a restaurant but they were forced to close it because she could no longer work and care for their children. After Edina's cataract surgery they reopened their restaurant and their son could go back to school.

Leads to Education and Opportunity

Globally, 19 million children are visually impaired or suffer from blindness. Children like Milka, who was diagnosed with severe nearsightedness, will be able to make the most of her education with clear vision. Those who have their sight restored are given an average of 50 years of sight, allowing them to build bright futures.

Empowers Women and Girls

Seva focuses on community-based approaches that tackle the social and economic barriers preventing women and girls from getting the care they need. Women and girls like Rattana, with her classmates and teachers, receive essential eye care to be able to learn, teach and lead healthy and productive lives.

Creates the Ripple Effect

Restoring sight to one person can help support an entire community. 75% of visually impaired people are assisted with everyday living by a relative, neighbor or a child. When one person regains sight, the rest of their family can concentrate on work, school, improving their home lives, and helping others in need – like Abdul did for 18 other people in his community.

Transforming Lives

Access to eye care has a huge impact.

Most eye care treatments change lives right away. A pair of glasses brings the world into focus. A 15-minute cataract surgery restores sight and independence. Medication for eye infections prevents decades of blindness and suffering. High-quality eye care creates an immediate and lasting impact.
